What is a Tune Up?
The term tune up is a relatively old term that originated from the process of actually tuning a carburetor. While new vehicles no longer use this type of fuel delivery the term persists, but it has definitely evolved. If you ask 5 different mechanics what their definition of a tune up is you will likely receive 5 different answers. What each answer will have in common though is the fact that these are usually small, fast services designed to help promote healthy operation engine. These are a few services that can help ensure that your vehicle will continue to run and operate with ease. If you ever feel your car begin to struggle or is losing MPGs be sure to talk to your mechanic about scheduling a tune up.
Replacing spark plugs & spark plug wires
The spark plugs are fed a small electrical charge which causes them to spark, thus igniting the air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber to pump the pistons up and down. If the spark plugs become dirty, ill-gapped or corroded they will begin to misfire, causing a rough running engine and decreasing fuel efficiency.
New air filter
A clogged air filter can result in decreased MPGs because if air can not make it into the motor, the vehicle will compensate by burning additional gasoline. This is a very simple item to replace and doing so will greatly help your vehicle's performance.
Replacement fuel filter
A dirty fuel filter will result in poor fuel flow and allow for the possibility of contaminants to make their way from the gas tank to the engine, which could cause major internal engine damage during combustion.
Fuel injection cleaning
The fuel injectors may become clogged after years of use. Cleaning them out will ensure a proper fuel flow, thus preventing a harsh idle or fuel delivery problems. Clogged filters could in fact prevent your vehicle from starting or cause it to stall.
Topping off fluids
Your vehicle requires several different fluids to operate. During a tune up they may be drained and replaced, called flushing, or simply topped off.
