Odd Vibrations: What Needs to be Repaired
Today's vehicles have many ways of communicating with drivers about various pieces of information. From informing you about you gas mileage to warning you about low tire pressure, our cars are amazing machines capable of a lot more than just getting people from point A to point B. But some problems don't come with a handy dashboard indicator light. These issues are diagnosed the old fashioned way, by smell and feeling, such as odd vibrations. A vibration can tell you a lot about a problem depending on when it occurs. These are three of the most common vehicle vibrations that require repair.
Gas Pedal Vibration
If you notice a vibration in the gas pedal as you cruise down the street you most likely have an exhaust leak. The vibration will increase as you accelerate, and it may be felt throughout the vehicle, depending on the severity of the leak. It's very important to repair exhaust leaks as they may allow for toxic fumes to enter the passenger cabin, putting you at risk of passing out at the wheel.
Brake Pedal Vibration
There are a few brake problems that can cause vibrations to occur as you slow your vehicle, resulting in a sensation coming from the brake pedal itself. The most common of these problems is warped rotors. If the surface of the rotor is uneven the brake pad will bounce up and down creating the shaking sensation. Brake pads with very little material left on them can also cause a vibration due to the start of metal on metal contact occurring. Never delay taking care of brake problems.
Shaking Steering Wheel
A steering wheel that jumps back and forth is most likely to be caused by an alignment problem. An alignment issue means that two wheels are trying to travel in separate directions, causing the steering wheel to shake back and forth as it works to move in both of those. A bad alignment will cause your tire tread to wear faster than it should and cause problems for other systems, such as the power steering and suspension.
