What is Leaking from my Car?

Driveway stains are unsightly, but what they do provide is a tell tale sign that something is amiss with your vehicle. Judging by the color and feel of the stain, and the location of the leak you can determine what the fluid is and make an appointment with your mechanic to have it fixed. Some leaks need to be address right away, such as brake fluid leaks. With others you may have some time to decide what your next step will be. But in the end, you will need to have a professional auto mechanic fix the leak. Use this guide to identify what is leaking from your vehicle before making an appointment to save yourself time and money.

One of the most common leaks any vehicle will experience is an oil leak. Depending on how used it is it will appear black or light brown and it can drip from many places in the engine. Take note of how much oil is leaking and give your mechanic a call to find out what to do next.

Brake Fluid

First off, if you notice a brake fluid leak, don't drive! You could have no braking power, putting you at risk of a serious accident. Brake fluid is generally clear or light brown and slimy to the touch. Leaks will most likely happen around the tires, coming from a brake cylinder or from the brake master cylinder, usually under the hood against the firewall.

Transmission Fluid

If you find a puddle of red fluid you have likely discovered an oil leak. Transmission fluid helps your car get through the gears and if you operate your vehicle when low on this fluid it could cause major transmission problems.

Differential Fluid

This fluid will look and feel very similar to transmission fluid so the best way to tell them apart is to identify where the leak is coming from. If you find the puddle near the rear of the vehicle then it is probably coming from the differential.

The fluid that regulates engine temperature and keeps your car engine nice and cool is called coolant and it is poured into the radiator. This fluid is usually bright green but can also come in yellow and pink. Coolant helps prevent overheating, which can cause major engine damage, so make an appointment to have this problem fixed right away.

When a vehicle rolls off the assembly line it is designed to hold all the liquid it came with. So if you notice a leak then something is wrong and the problem will likely need some sort of repair.
