Does My Vehicle Need a Fluid Flush?

All vehicles use several different fluids in order to operate their many systems. This includes brake fluid, which helps to stop the car, coolant, which is tasked with keeping the operating temperature of the motor low, power steering fluid that makes turning on a dime a breeze, and a few others. During operation these fluids may be come contaminated, either with moisture or dirt and dust, or other debris. As part of your vehicle's scheduled services these fluids need to be flushed, which entails draining and refilling them. Depending on the system and the vehicle these services are usually only necessary between every 30,000 and 100,000 miles. Let's take a closer look at some of the fluids utilized by today's cars and trucks.

Automatic Transmission Fluid Flush

Automatic transmission rely on hydraulic force to shift through the gears. If the transmission fluid becomes dirty or if there is insufficient fluid many problems can arise. This includes gears grinding or delayed acceleration and you may experience the transmission slipping out of gear or shifting unnecessarily. These problems can be of major concern as they may result in major transmission damage but it also leaves the possibility of power and control issues.

Power Steering Flush

Power steering flushes must be done to ensure that your ability to control the vehicle is never compromised. Power steering fluid may go bad and deteriorate due to the constant rise and fall in temperature that the fluid goes through as well as the immense friction it is subject to in its lifecycle, both resulting in gunky buildup, making it difficult to steer your vehicle. Contaminated fluid may also cause the power steering pump to fail.

Brake Fluid Flush

Brake fluid has a bad habit of absorbing moisture from the air. If too much moisture is trapped by the brake fluid it may cause damage to brake parts or prevent them from working properly. If the brake fluid becomes contaminated it may result in several different braking problems, such as a soft brake pedal or vehicle pulling.

Coolant Flush

Coolant, AKA antifreeze, is another vehicle fluid that occasionally needs to be drained and refilled because of the buildup of dirt, dust and other contaminants. Coolant travels through the hottest parts of the motor so anything it is carrying may actually spark, which may result in a fire. Always be sure your coolant is fresh and clean!
