3 Common Signs of Power Steering Failure
Did you know the first vehicle that Henry Ford built had no brakes, no reverse and only one forward gear? Talk about a scary driving experience! Lucky for us modern vehicles are equipped with many safety and comfort features that make cruising down the road an almost effortless act. One of the greatest advancements in automotive technology is power steering. This fluid driven system makes controlling your vehicle a much smoother task as it does not allow for play in the steering wheel and it makes turning at slow speeds very easy. If you experience any of these symptoms of power steering trouble be sure to head to the auto repair shop to have the problem solved in order to keep your ride safe and comfy.
A strong indication of trouble is a whining noise that occurs as you turn the steering wheel. This noise is generally created by a power steering pump that is low on fluid or has fluid that needs to be flushed. In short, the noise means that the pump is not able to push any power steering fluid through the system. First things first, check the power steering reservoir to be sure there is an ample amount of fluid. If the fluid levels are correct and it is not due for a flush then the problem is likely a faulty power steering pump.
Vibrating Steering Wheel
Often times the first sign of power steering problems is a vibrating steering wheel, caused by a malfunctioning drive belt. If the belt has knocks or tears or if it slips it will cause the steering wheel to vibrate uncontrollably. While the car is stopped, on and in in park (P) or neutral turn the steering wheel back and forth and see if you can find a certain spot where the wheel starts to vibrate. If there is a primary location in the steering wheel turning radius that causes the vibration it is most likely caused by problems with the power steering drive belt.
Hard to Turn Steering Wheel
Another common sight of power steering trouble is a steering wheel that is difficult to turn. This is most often attributed to low levels of power steering fluid, which likely means there is a leak in the system. It could also mean that your vehicle is due for a power steering fluid flush. However this symptom can also be caused by an alignment problem or low tire pressure, so be sure to have a professional auto repair mechanic diagnose the actual cause of this particular problem.
