Great Auto Maintenance Tips to Increase MPGs
As the spring and summer driving seasons near it is important to think about doing a little maintenance on your vehicle to ensure it can take the heat and the miles this summer. Many people put on a lot of extra miles on their car during these months due to added activities and road trips, but they don't take into account the extra maintenance their vehicles will require. So before you hit the road be sure to give your ride a little extra attention so it can get you everywhere you want to go without sacrificing fuel economy.
Inflate tires to proper PSI
Under inflated tires make it so your engine has to work harder in order to get the soft rubber to roll over. You can find your stock tire's air pressure rating, called psi, or pounds per square inch, in your owner's manual and check tire pressure at most gas stations and fill it up at the same time if it is found to be low.
Replace the air filter
Your vehicle relies on a mixture of air and gas in order to run correctly. If air can't get to the combustion chamber your vehicle will compensate by burning excessive amounts of fuel, greatly reducing your MPGs. Make sure your air filter is clean!
Change the spark plugs
The spark plugs are what generate the tiny explosion that ignites the air/fuel mixture in order to pump the pistons. If the plugs become dirty or corroded they will misfire, causing the engine to run very poorly and burning up gasoline at the wrong time. Check your owner's manual to find out how often your car's spark plugs should be serviced.
Inspect and replace the O2 and MAF sensors if necessary
The oxygen sensor and mass airflow sensor both take readings of air levels, the O2 in the exhaust and the MAF in the intake, and both help calculate the proper air/fuel mix. If these sensors are dirty or malfunctioning it can cause them to take incorrect readings that drastically intake fuel use.
Keep up with oil changesIt is vital to your vehicle that you keep up with oil changes. When an oil change is completed the old oil is drained from your vehicle, bringing with it thick grime buildup from inside the engine. This sludge like substance makes your engine work harder, reducing power and fuel efficiency. Oil changes restore both of these things!
