End of Summer Maintenance that Saves You Gas
It is sad to say but the roadtrip season is coming to a close. The miles that get racked up on the odometer over the summer often spike the monthly average of miles covered in a month over any other time of the year. As people across the country pull into their driveway after long trips to Anywhere, USA, it is important not to forget to give the car the attention it deserves after getting the family home safely. While most auto maintenance becomes routine it is important to do it on time, and in the summer that usually means sooner than normal because of these long trips. These maintenance tips will save you gas and money, so be sure to get them done by a professional auto mechanic!
Change the Air Filter
Vehicles run on a mixture of gas and air. Air will pass through the air filter so that dirt and dust do not get into the engine. If this filter becomes clogged it will prevent air from getting to the engine. This means that the vehicle will have to burn more gasoline in order to compensate for the lack of air, which is a waste of fuel and this can cause internal engine damage.
New Spark Plugs
Spark plugs are what your engine uses to create the power necessary to pump the pistons up and down. A small explosion is created by the plugs and if the spark plugs become corroded it can cause misfires, which is a waste of fuel.
Pump up Your Tires
Tires are designed to be filled to a specific air pressure. If tires are underinflated it means the engine will have to work harder to get the soft rubber to spin. Low tires also reduce your ability to properly control the vehicle, so make sure they are filled to the proper air pressure.
After adding a lot of excessive miles to your vehicle make sure you check to see if it is time for an oil change sooner than normal. Oil changes provide your vehicle with the lubrication it needs to run smoothly and when you drain old oil it brings grime and engine buildup out with it, keeping your engine nice and clean.
Auto maintenance is important for all vehicles if you want them to run properly for a many, many miles. Conducting fall maintenance will ensure your car is good to go as you start the school year!
