End of Summer Auto Maintenance
As the summer comes to an end it is important to provide your car with some end of season maintenance to ensure it carries you through the fall and winter without trouble. While many types of maintenance are needed at certain mileage points, completing these services at the end of summer can help improve vehicle performance through the cooler months. Here's five tips to improved fall driving.
Most cars and trucks require an oil change every 3,000 miles. If your vehicle is anywhere near due, which it likely isn't following the driving season, be sure to head to the shop. Fresh oil lubricates the motor, ensuring maximum efficiency. The oil change process will also remove any summer build up in the engine.
New Air Filter
Speaking of summer build up, the air in the warmer months tends to be more dusty. The dry air allows particles of dirt and pollen to float around, which ends up being sucked into your engine and clinging to the air filter. If the filter becomes clogged your vehicle could suffer from a decrease in fuel efficiency and other runability issues.
Check your Tires
The hot summer temperatures and extra miles you may have put on your car this summer can take a toll on rubber. Look for balding tread, bubbling sidewall or cracked rubber. Any of these are indicators that your vehicle could benefit from new tires.
Wipers & Lights
As the days get shorter and the chances of precipitation increase you'll want to ensure all your lights work and your windshield wipers can do their job with ease. Have a friend help you check your headlights, tail lights, blinkers, brights, reverse lights and brake lights. If any are out, just remember that replacement bulbs are quite cheap.
A cooling system flush following the summer is a good way to help prepare your car for winter. Fresh coolant that is free of any contaminants can protect your vehicle from overheating and freezing issues if the temperatures really drop.
