Common Signs of it's Time for Engine Repair
The engine is the heart of your vehicle. It produces the power that gets you to all the places you need to be. The engine requires routine maintenance such as oil changes and other scheduled service in order to remain in tip top shape. If it is neglected of service or has seen many, many miles the engine may begin to have issues operating and you'll likely notice several symptoms of trouble. If you run into any of these common signs of engine failure be sure to get in touch with your local mechanic right away to have the problem addressed before you end up stuck on the side of the road.
Excessive Engine Noise
Perhaps one of the first signs of trouble that you will notice is an increase in engine noise, particularly a loud knocking noise that will increase in repetition as the speed of the engine increases. This is usually caused by worn out engine bearings.
Large Amounts of Exhaust
Another common symptom of engine problems is excessive exhaust smoke coming out of the tail pipe. The color of the smoke can often inform you about what the trouble is.
- Black Exhaust Smoke - Black exhaust generally indicates that the vehicle is burning excessive amounts of gasoline. This is usually caused by a leaking or faulty fuel injector unit or even a clogged air filter.
- Blue Exhaust Smoke - If there is an oil leak inside the engine allowing oil to be burn in the combustion chamber the vehicle will produce blue smoke. This means that the engine is not being properly lubricated.
- White Exhaust Smoke - An internal coolant leak will produce white smoke. This puts the car at risk of overheating problems.
If you ever notice any sort of liquid dripping from the engine you should head to a mechanic right away. Vehicles use a variety of different fluids to operate their different systems, including oil, coolant, power steering fluid and transmission fluid. While a leak may not mean engine trouble it still needs to be addressed.
Reduction of Power
One of the biggest signs of trouble is a noticeable reduction in power, particularly during acceleration. This can be caused by a variety of problems and the issue needs to be addressed by a mechanic as soon as possible.
At the first sign of trouble be sure to head to the mechanic to have the issue properly diagnosed and resolved.
