Car Won't Start? 5 Common Auto Electrical Problems

You head out to your car after work ready to start the weekend, but when you go to turn the key, the engine won't start. You may experience no noise from the motor, or it may struggle to turn over, or it cranks but won't fire. What has gone wrong? Unless you're out of gas, you more than likely have an electrical problem with your vehicle. Here are 5 common auto electric issues that may prevent your car from starting.

Dead Battery

If you leave your lights on, or some other accessory, while your car is parked it could drain the battery's electrical power. If the battery dies your car isn't going anywhere. Thankfully a dead battery can usually be jumped. But if it dies because it is old, you will need to replace it to get back on the road. The battery is the source for all electrical power in the car.

Bad Alternator

The alternator is why keeps the battery charged. It is hooked to a belt system that is spun by the turning of the engine and the power created recharges the battery while the vehicle is running. If the alternator goes bad the battery will quickly be drained and all power lost.

Bad Spark Plugs or Wires

Spark plugs create a small explosion that powers the pistons up or down. If one or more plugs or the wires they are connected to go bad it will make your vehicle run very rough, or it may be be able to start at all. Signs of bad spark plugs include poor acceleration, decreased fuel efficiency or the vehicle engine cranking but not starting.

Bad Ignition Switch

If your ignition switch goes bad you won't be able to create the electrical circuit necessary to power the starter motor that gets the engine going. Signs of a bad ignition switch include flickering dash lights, the key not turning in the ignition or the vehicle stalling.

Faulty Starter

The starter motor is what gets the engine going initially. If this electric motor goes bad you may only hear a clicking noise when you turn the key. That is the sound of the motor actuating, but not spinning.
