If this happens you need brake repair now!
It is unfortunate but not uncommon for people to put off necessary auto repairs. This can result in the problem getting worse, or even beyond repair, and causing major issues in terms of operation and safety. This is true for problems related to the engine, transmission, steering system and even the brakes. But brake problems should never be ignored, as the brakes are the most important safety feature of your car. If you experience any of these signs of brake problems be sure to contact your local mechanic right away to have the issue resolved.
Soft Brake Pedal
If you can easily push your brake pedal to the floor or if feels like you it it is spongy there is a good chance that you have air in the brake lines. However it could also indicate highly worn brake pads or even a dangerous brake fluid leak.
You may have uneven wearing of the brake pads if your car tries to pull to the left or right as you brake. But this may also be caused by something more serious, such as impurities in the brake fluid or a stuck wheel cylinder.
Vibrations while Braking
There are many things that can cause your car to vibrate but it's easy to tell what system is the root cause based on your actions at the time. If you feel vibrations while braking you likely have warped rotors, which is what the brake pads grab to create the friction to slow your vehicle. The uneven surface can greatly impede your ability to brake.
Grinding Noise while Braking
If you hear a grinding noise as you brake then your brake pads are likely very low or completely gone. The grinding you are hearing is metal rubbing on metal, which does not allow for decent braking power.
Brake Fluid Leak
If you ever notice brownish-clear fluid collecting near one of your wheels you likely have a brake fluid leak and you should not drive your car, at all. This is extremely dangerous and could mean that you'll lose your braking power.
Brake trouble should never, ever be ignored. The brakes are your best defense against causing an accident.
