The illumination of the check engine light is never a welcomed situation. What many people don't understand about this light though is that the check engine light is generally informing you that there is a small issue on board that can be fixed quickly and inexpensively. By heading to the auto repair shop as soon as the light comes on you will be able to prevent bigger problems from occurring. However, should you delay having diagnostics performed it could turn into a very nasty repair bill, as shown by this first check engine light problem.
Failed Catalytic Converter
One of the worst issues represented by the check engine light is a faulty catalytic converter. It can be very pricey to replace this particular part which is tasked with converting hazardous exhaust fumes into less harmful emissions. It generally won't fail unless there was first a problem with the a different part such as the oxygen sensor, which would have caused the light to turn on long ago.
Malfunctioning MAF Sensor
The other sensor that helps calculate the proper air/fuel mix inside the engine is the mass airflow sensor. This sensor measures incoming air and calculates how much of it needs to be mixed with the gas in the combustion chamber. A failing mass airflow sensor can result in a drop in MPGs and cause a rough running engine.
Faulty O2 Sensor
The O2 sensor is located in the exhaust system and is designed to measure the levels of oxygen in the exhaust fumes. This allows for it to help dictate the air and fuel mix that inside the engine to ensure maximum fuel efficiency. If this sensor fails it could result in trouble for the catalytic converter.
Cracked/Loose Gas Cap
The best thing that you can hope for if the check engine light comes on is a loose or cracked gas cap. If the gas cap is not properly secured it could result in gas fumes evaporating out of the filler tube. To prevent a trip to the auto shop for a virtually nonexistent issue be sure to always tighten the gas cap after a fill up.
It is important to understand that engine problems aren't the only things that can trigger the light to turn on. Issues with the transmission, especially due to low transmission fluid levels, could also turn illuminate the light.
