Few things are as frustrating as a vehicle that won't start. If your car has suddenly began to give you trouble when you turn the key there are a few common issues that could be causing it. Take note of the symptoms your car is exhibiting to best diagnose the issue. This can help speed up the repair process when you take your car into the shop!
First of all you will want to make sure that the battery is not dead. If you turn the key and absolutely nothing happens, including no electronics or accessories working, your best bet is a dead battery. You may be able to jump start the car, however it may be time for a battery replacement.
Fuel delivery issue
In order for a car to run it needs electricity (spark) air and gasoline. If it isn't getting gas your engine will likely turn over and over but refuse to fire. Common fuel delivery issues include:Out of gas - This may seem obvious, but have you checked your fuel meter? Bad fuel pump - The fuel pump is located in the gas tank and designed to pump gas to the engine. Clogged fuel filter - If the fuel filter becomes clogged sufficient amounts of gasoline won't be able to make it to the engine. The filter needs to be replaced based on manufacturer recommendations. Malfunctioning fuel injector unit - If the fuel injection unit is leaking, clogged or otherwise failing to deliver fuel your car will not be able to start.
The alternator creates electricity as the motor runs, thus power electric accessories, including the radio, as the car runs. Extra electricity is stored in the battery. If it is failing you will notice lack of power in accessories, dim headlights, or a slow cranking engine.
The starter motor is what gets the engine spinning to create the pressure necessary to ignite the air and fuel mixture. A failing starter motor will produce a loud click or series of clicks when you turn the key.
Diagnosing a no-start problem can be difficult, but an expert technician will likely be able to to understand the symptoms of trouble in order to quickly ID the issue and get it fixed.
