Wheel alignments are an oft forgotten about but very important service that most vehicles will require at one time or another in their lifetime. Even if you are never involved in an accident, smaller bumps can throw your alignment off. This includes run ins with pot holes, curbs or other objects. If a vehicle's wheel alignment is thrown off then there is a good chance that the vehicle will become more difficult to control, which is dangerous for yourself and other people on the road.
If you experience any of the following symptoms of alignment trouble you need to schedule an appointment for further diagnostics with your local auto shop. Be sure to take your vehicle to a professional mechanic as soon as possible to have the issue corrected. Poor wheel alignment is unsafe and can result in more damage to your vehicle if not quickly taken care of.
Shakey Steering Wheel
Generally one of the biggest signs of alignment issues is a steering wheel that shakes back and forth. This will happen because a bad alignment means that at least one wheel is pointing in a direction that is not the same as the rest of the wheels. This causes the vehicle to try and go in two separate directions, thus making the steering wheel rock back and forth. This can eventually cause damage to the steering column and other parts of the steering system if the issue is not resolved before it gets worse.
A car that drifts to one side of the road or the other is obviously having some kind of problem. Cars are designed to drive straight down the road on a flat surface, with little direction from a driver. You may experience two types of drifting, or pulling, as it is also known, if you're experience alignment issues. The first, called soft pulling, is hardly noticeable. Your car may gently glide to the side as you drive, usually representing a small alignment issue. However if you experience hard pulling, where you must fight the steering wheel to keep you car driving straight, you've got a bigger problem on your hands.
Strange Tire Wear
If you suspect wheel alignment problems go ahead and check out your tires. You'll likely find strange wear patterns on the tires, where one tire will wear differently from that directly across from it.
