Clunk! Clank! Bang! And a big puff of smoke. Sometimes it is easy to tell that something catastrophic has happened under the hood, other times you may think it just needs a little repair when in reality the whole motor is toast. These signs of engine problems likely are the result of having a high mileage car or a vehicle that was not serviced properly. If you experience any of these, it may be time for a new engine.
Metal Flakes in the Oil
If you notice metal shavings in the engine oil that you drain for your car when you change it this is a sure sign that there is extreme metal on metal contact happening somewhere in the internal parts. This means parts are wearing down and becoming weak which will in short cause dramatic engine failure at some point. Seek the help of a local mechanic before you're stranded on the side of the road.
Loud Knocking Sound
An engine's moving parts rest on engine bearings that are lubricated by the oil that flows through the engine while it is running. These bearings create a high volume knocking noise as they wear out due to extremely high miles or if the engine has been excessively run with low oil. If these bearings fail the engine will seize.
White Exhaust Smoke
Excessive white exhaust smoke can be caused by wear of the piston rings. When these rings wear out, usually because they are subject to extreme temperatures over long periods of time, they no longer seal properly allowing oil to mix with burning gasoline. When the oil is burned with in the cylinder it creates the white smoke that travels the length of the exhaust system. Burning oil means your car is not getting enough lubrication inside the engine.
These are some of the more common signs of engine failure and if you experience any of them you should see your local mechanic right away. In Gonzales the professional mechanics at All Tune and Lube will be able to diagnose and repair any engine issue that you're having.
